Notes

Paladino was born in Tuscany and received his early training in the Florentine Mannerist style. He was accused of wounding a man and had to leave Florence in 1586, first for Pisa and then for Malta. By 1601 he was settled in Sicily and many of his altarpieces survive in towns throughout the island. His style retains the characteristics of his early training, recalling Jacopo da Empoli and Santi di Tito, as well as some Caravaggesque elements. Several sketchbooks of his drawings are in the Museo Nazionale, Siracusa.1 Ralph Holland considered this a preliminary idea for Paladini's altarpiece in the Duomo, Piazza Armerina, although there are significant differences in the composition. Holland's notes indicate that this might have come from the Royal Cornwall Museum, which did sell some drawings, many from the collection of Alfred De Pass, in two sales at Christie's, 30 November 1965 and 22 February 1966. Hal O'Nians made purchases at those sales, but it has not been possible to identify this drawing in the catalogues. 1. For paintings, and some of the drawings, see Filippo Paladini, exhib. cat., Palermo, Palazzo dei Normanni, 1967
