Notes

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE JACOBUS A. KLAVER, AMSTERDAM
Henstenburgh made many sheets of studies of insects, very similar to this in conception and mise-en-page. These drawings do not typically have black backgrounds as in the present sheet, although a comparable study in the same technique was sold in New York, Sotheby's, 26 January 2005, lot 214. Furthermore, the artist used black or very dark backgrounds in one or two of his more elaborate still-life compositions (such as the example formerly in the Van Leeuwen Collection, sold Amsterdam, Christie's, 24 November 1992, lot 102).
