We are grateful to drs. Luuk Pijl for proposing an attribution to Jacob Isaacsz. van Swanenburg, Rembrandt's first teacher in Leiden. It is of interest that this depiction of Christ rescuing the souls of the righteous from Limbo (at lower left) abounds in references to the Four Elements and to alchemical transmutation.
