Notes

This fine Rembrandt School drawing belongs to a group of similar figure studies on blue paper, all bear numberings in the form seen here, most but not all of which also depict female nudes. The drawings were traditionally attributed to Govert Flinck,υ1 and while some scholars still retain that attribution for most of the drawings in the group, Peter Schatborn has more recently suggested an alternative attribution to Jacob van Loo, who is recorded as having drawn from a female nude model together with Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol in 1658υ.2 Other names that have also been associated with drawings of this type include Jacob Backer, Jan van Noordt and Abraham van den Tempel. 1.
