Description

13 1/2 x 18 in. (34.3 x 45.7 cm.)

Notes

The subject is taken from 2 Kings IV, 1-7. The widow, whose poverty has left her sons threatened with slavery, appeals to Elisha. The prophet tells her to collect empty vessels from her neighbours and to fill them from a jar of oil which she owned. Obeying the prophet the widow finds that the jar miraculously replenishes to which the prophet says 'Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.'

Astrid and Christian Tümpel consider the artist to be an unknown pre-Rembrandtist on the basis of a photograph.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
