Item Overview

Description

ATTRIBUTED TO JAN VINCENTSZ. VAN DER VINNE HAARLEM 1663 - 1721 AN EXTENSIVE LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES AND A GENTLEMAN SHOOTING OVER POINTERS oil on canvas 56 by 112 cm.; 22 by 44 in.

Notes

A pupil of Jan Wyck at Haarlem, van der Vinne came to England in 1686, where he established himself as a painter of sporting scenes. Usually conceived on a small scale, his works are of particular interest today for their depiction of modes of dress adopted by sportsmen in the field. Examples like the present painting in particular also demonstrate that, despite popular belief and the benefits of modern weaponry, gentlemen of this date were quite capable of shooting birds on the wing.

The central figural composition of the present painting is closely repeated in another composition by the artist, though with a more restricted panorama, illustrated in Colonel Grant's history of English landscape painters [i].
