Item Overview

Description

ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS POPE-STEVENS c.1780 A Portrait of John Doyle FRCS, half length wearing a wig, burgundy coat and white stock, and the companion portrait of his wife, Frances (nee Savage) wearing a satin dress and and a pink cloak with a spray of flowers at her bossom, both within feigned ovals Oil on canvas, a pair, 77 x 62cms each, unframed (2) Note : John Doyle is recorded in the archives of the Royal College of Surgeons as at 14 Ushers Island, Dublin and he died in May 1819. Thomas Pope Stevens, a member of a large artistic family exhibited numerous portraits in Dublin between 1770-1780. Given that the subjects can be reliably identified they are typical of Stevens' clientelle and show the influence of Hunter. He is often confused with Justin Pope Stevens, his brother and there is no satisfactory study of the Pope Stevens Family
