Description

ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM GAY YORKE (British/American, 1817-1892) PORTRAIT OF THE AMERICAN SHIP "I.F. CHAPMAN". Fine large oil on canvas ship portrait shows a black hulled three-mast vessel with sails up sailing right to left off Liverpool which is designated by a lighthouse and point of land. Ship's name is emblazoned on the bow and stern and the American flag with smaller flags are off stern. Several people are on deck and a steam sail ship along with a large sailboat is seen off the right. Housed in a period gesso decorated gilt frame with gold liner. PROVENANCE: Sewall Estate, bath, Maine. SIZE: 24" x 36". CONDITION: Relined, very good. 9-90162 HP
