Description

ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM JONES OF BATH FL.1764-1777 STILL LIFE WITH PEACHES AND AN APPLE ON A PEWTER PLATE 22 by 18 3/4 in.; 55.9 by 47.6 cm. bears signature on the edge of the table W. James / 1779: oil on canvas Provenance: With Colleton House Gallery, Bath, England, where purchased by the present owner, 1987. Catalogue Note: William Jones was a still life painter working at Bath, where he settled in 1769. He exhibited still lifes from 1764 - 1771. Ellis Waterhouse (see "British Eighteenth Century Paintings" in Dictionary of British Art, Woodbridge 1981, p. 199) notes a group of paintings dated 1777 at Gosford Park by the artist; the present work, dated two years later, would document the latest work known by the artist.
