Description

Auguste Jules Bouvier (1827-1881) Pandora standing, full-length, holding a pipe signed A. Bouvier and dated 1874 bottom left inscribed with title on an exhibition label attached to the backboard watercolour heightened with white 75 x 37cm. In Greek mythology Pandora was the first woman and as Hesiod related, each God helped create her bestowing unique gifts According to the myth, Pandora opened a jar, in modern accounts sometimes mis-translated as 'Pandora's Box', releasing all the evils of mankind - leaving only hope inside once she had closed it. She opened the jar out of simple curiosity, not malice.
