Auguste Pegurier (1856-1936) Oil on Canvas "La Citadelle". Signed lower right. In ornate carved gilt wood French frame. In frame measures 19 1/2"x14 3/4"x2". Weight 4 pds 2 oz. Born in 1856 in Saint Tropez, Auguste Pegurier was the first true ambassador of St.Tropez splendor. Like the Impressionist masters, he was known for his sense of the moving light. He was a musician as well as a painter. He was a pupil at the Academie Julian and a student of Carolus Duran. He exhibited at group exhibitions including those of the Salon des Artistes Francais, the Salon des Independents and the Salon d'Automne. He was the first of the St. Tropez painters. He gained international recognition after his death and when some of his works were auctioned in the 1960s. PROVENANCE: A Paris France/Charleston SC Estate.
