Revenaugh was born in Zanesville, Ohio. He studied medicine in college, but after serving in the Civil War he took up painting and eventually established a reputation for portraiture, far beyond Jackson, Michigan where he settled in 1871. For a time, his specialty was creating portraits based on photographs.
