Item Overview

Description

HUSZAR, Vilmos (Hungarian 1884 - 1960). Autograph letter, signed. Autograph letter, signed 'V Huszár', dated 'Voorburg 1920. feb. 23' and stamped "HUSZAR VOORBURG Z.H.". On the upper right a large original linocut of his vignette for De Stijl, printed by hand. One sheet of unlined paper, unfolded (!), sl. browned along the edges, with two small marginal tears and two punch holes at the left edge. With pencil annotation on the reverse: "Aangetroffen in Wendingen nr. 3 1929 (aankoop ƒ 75-)". The letter is without a greeting, but was probably sent to Hendrik Wijdeveld, the editor of Wendingen. Unrecorded.

Notes

NB Wendingen nr. 3 1929 is the Diego Rivera issue, designed by Huszár. Wijdeveld probably filed the letter in a folder, given the holes at the left. If so, the next owner must have put the letter in a copy of the Rivera issue, where it was found by the present owner. The letter provides us an interesting variant of the vignette for De Stijl. The dimensions of the famous woodcut are the same as the print on the letter but the differences are important. The cover of De Stijl shows a much more stylized design, with very sharp lines and more space between the blocks, whereas the print on Huszár's stationery seems more hesitant, less regular. Although De Stijl was already published with Huszár's design on the cover in 1917 and the letter offered here was only sent three years later, we strongly believe that the linocut on the latter must have been produced earlier. It is very unlikely that a member of De Stijl goes down from sharp blocks to a design that is clearly less elaborate. Therefore we consider the linocut as a prototype, a prototype for one of the most iconic covers in the history of art, printed by hand by the designer himself. Added: The (loose) front cover of De Stijl 1917, no. X. With an advertisement by Huszár for C. Bruynzeel & Zonen. on verso. Poor condition, edges severely browned and worn, upper corners gone.
