Description

Prince "Monyo" Mihailescu-Nasturel Herescu (Romania, 20th-21st century), titled Arabesque on base, signed on base; wd. 46, ht. 60, dp. 19.25 in.

A descendent of the Romanian royal family, Prince "Monyo" was imprisoned by the Communist government until granted freedom and brought to the United States in 1960. He began making works out of clay in 1961 after an inspirational trip to Mexico City. There he was introduced to Mexican artists Rufino Tamayo and Alex Duval. Many of his clay works are cast into bronze objects through the lost-wax process. Prince Monyo's work has received international recognition and his pieces have been exhibited and owned by collectors in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy and France.
