Description

Premier portrait d'Artaud réalisé par Balthus.

Crayon sur papier (310 x 235 mm), sous Marie-Louise et encadrement.
Petit accroc sans manque, n'atteignant pas le dessin (25 mm).

Sous le portrait, cette inscription autographe signée de Balthus : "Artaud, Février 1934. Balthus" à la mine de plomb ; et, sous cette inscription, cet envoi postérieur : "Pour Pierre [Loeb], en souvenir d'Artaud et de Balthus, 1953" toujours à la mine de plomb.

Un second portrait d'Artaud par Balthus, daté de 1935, portant un envoi à Tristan Tzara figurait à l'exposition Artaud de la Bibliothèque nationale de France en 2006 (n° 164, p. 185).

Pierre Loeb et Balthus étaient des proches d'Artaud. En mai 1946, ils faisaient partis du petit groupe de fidèles composé, entre autres, de Dubuffet, Adamov, Gide, Barrault ou encore Picasso qui organisèrent sa sortie de l'asile de Rodez dans lequel Artaud était interné depuis plus de neuf ans. Pierre Loeb organisa, en juin 1946, une vente aux enchères de dessins, tableaux et manuscrits à la Galerie Pierre au profit d'Artaud. Le 1er décembre 1953, Balthus lui offrit ce croquis en souvenir de leur ami commun.
