Helen (1863-1946). The Story of Little Black Sambo, London: Grant Richards, 1899. 16o (125 x 80mm.). Illustrations by the author, coloured from woodblocks by Edmund Evans. (Hinges broken and leaves detached, occasional light thumb-marks). Original publisher's cloth. (Upper cover slightly bowed, spine a little darkened, lightly rubbed). Provenance : "Georgina Lloyd with love from Leila/Jan. 16th 1900" (ink inscription on verso of front endpaper). FIRST EDITION. Helen Bannerman wrote Little Black Sambo in 1898 for her two small daughters, whom she had left with their nurse in Kodai, a small mountain village in India, while she travelled to Madras to join her husband, a doctor in the Indian medical service.
