Barclay Sheaks Virginia (b. 1928) NORTH OF HATTERAS (triptych panel) acrylic on masonite, framed, signed: lower left of left panel and dated 1970 each panel H36" W24" *Artist biography: Barclay Sheaks, born in 1928 in Virginia, has had paintings appear in distinguished universities and corporate and private art collections worldwide. He has participated extensively in juried exhibitions sponsored by the American Watercolor Society, National Academy of Design, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Smithsonian Institution, among others. He has served as artist-in-residence for both the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Richmond Humanities Center, Virginia. The acrylic medium he used to create this painting was his preferred method of working. He was quoted as saying "My art is the direct result of the distillation of my life experiences translated into graphic form. Any message interpreted by observers is not intended but simply a reflection of my individual angle of perception. Acrylic paint is my favored painting medium because of its versatile capabilities and permanence." Mr. Sheaks also prepared, executed and hosted a nationally syndicated television series for PBS, Acrylic Painting with Barclay Sheaks, in1985. He is author of several books; PAINTING FROM START TO FINISH; DRAWING AND PAINTING IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT; PAINTING IN OILS; STRETCHING THE EYES' DISTANCE: REFLECTIONS ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY; DRAWING FIGURES AND FACES; ACRYLIC PAINTING WITH BARCLAY SHEAKS; THE ACRYLIC BOOK. Some of the museums and corporations housing Sheaks work are: The Butler Institute of American Art; Columbia Museum; Virginia Museum; Valentine Museum; Mobile Museum; Chrysler Museum; American Tobacco Co.; Blue Cross-Blue Shield; Christopher Newport Un.; Virginia Commonwealth University ; Longwood College; Norfolk Public Schools; National Brewing Co.; Randolph Macon College; Medical College of Virginia; Riverside Hospital; National Aeronautics and Space Administration and others. Currently Sheaks resides in Virginia and is a distinguished resident artist and associate professor of art at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia. "I choose to think that my art, like my life, is always in a state of becoming: a flux of new discoveries and a returning to old icons with renewed vision."
