Description

A landscape with a shepherd overlooking a river, a cow, sheep and horses nearby signed and dated 'B:H:Thier f1779' (lower left) oil on panel 29.4 x 39.1 cm. NOTES The artist began his career as a painter of wallpapers in Amsterdam and Haarlem. He subsequently moved to Leeuwarden, The Hague and Leiden, where he specialised in flower still lifes and landscapes, such as the present lot (see R. van Eijnden and A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst, II, 1817, p. 372).
