Item Overview

Description

1. Multae et diversae avium species variis formis et pernaturalibus figuris [London:] P. Tempest, 1694. Title, double-page dedication to Richard Lord Maitland, by Francis Place, 13 double-page plates by Jan Griffier I (5), Francis Place (5), Johannnes Kip (1), Richard Gaywood (1) and 1 unsigned, all after Barlow. (Left outer margin of the 8th plate repaired). UNRECORDED IN ESTC.
2. Diversae avium species. Studiosissime ad vitam delineatae. [London:] P. Tempest, 1646. Title, 28 plates after Barlow, Place (1) and 'Hondekooter' (1) by Kip (1), Place (11), I. Simon (1), Hulsbergh (1) and 13 unsigned.
3. Diversae avium species studiosissime ad vitam delineatae. [London:] E. Cooper, [n.d.]. Title by Gaywood, 13 plates by Wenceslas Hollar (10), Gaywood (1) and 2 unsigned, all after Barlow. (The 11th and 12th plates with repairs to the margins, the 13th plate with repair to a tear affecting the image area). ESTC records only an edition of 1658 published by Wm. Faithorne, noting that the number of plates in that (and therefore other editions?) may vary.
4. Varia quadrupedum species, accuratissime delineatae. [London:] E. Cooper, [n.d.]. Title, 15 plates (1 double-page) by Hollar (8), Place (1), Gaywood (2), R. Savery (1) and 3 unsigned, all after Barlow. Five of the plates are variously dated between 1659 and 1663. UNRECORDED IN ESTC.
5. Severall Wayes of Hunting, Hawking, and Fishing, according to the English manner. Invented by Francis Barlow. Etched by W. Hollar. London: John Overton, 1671. Engraved title and 12 plates. Although the plates are signed by Hollar, only the title and 'Hare hunting', 'River fishing', 'Salmon fishing' and 'Angling' are believed to be his work. The remaining plates are attributed to Barlow. ESTC locates 3 copies (Huntington, National Trust, and Folger).

5 works in one volume, oblong 2° (303 x 185mm). Engraved or etched throughout. Early-19th century green morocco gilt, gilt edges (extremities scuffed). Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 22 May 1939, lot 146).

A SAMMELBAND OF RARE WORKS BY FRANCIS BARLOW, father of the British sporting print and the first native-born illustrator of note. This fine selection of his work is engraved or etched by William Hollar, Francis Place and others. SCHWERDT COPY. Schwerdt I, p.51; cf. Hodnett Francis Barlow 102 & 104.
