Baynes (Pauline, 1922-2008). St. Francis of Assisi, gouache illustration, showing St. Francis of Assisi standing beside Jesus in the manger, surrounded by animals and birds, signed to lower left-hand corner, 248 x 168 mm (9.75 x 6.5 ins), mounted, framed and glazed. Although best known for her Narnia illustrations, Pauline Baynes was a prolific book artist, and arguably one of the greatest illustrators of the 20th century. (1)
