Item Overview

Description

BEN NASON
New Haven Railroad/Nantucket.
Located thirty miles south of Cape Cod, the island of Nantucket, much like Martha's Vineyard, is a tourist destination and summer colony that once thrived as a whaling port. However, due to a decline on domestic dependence on whale oil and the depopulation of the island following the 'Great Fire' of 1846, Nantucket was left underdeveloped and isolated until the mid-Twentieth Century. And though unquestionably unfortunate, this isolation kept many of the pre-Civil War buildings intact and by the 1950s, enterprising developers began restoring these structures to create an upmarket destination in the Northeastern United States. And it's this ironic twist of fate that Nason focuses on in this New Haven Railroad poster historical architectural preservation brought about by seizing on adversity past.
