Description

(BENJAMIN F. BUTLER) (1818-1893) Union major general, called "The Beast" for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. Later in the war, he commanded the Army of the James. Carte de visite of a cartoon caricature of Butler as a Turkish pirate about to behead a poor waif with his bloody sword, titled "Bluebeard of New Orleans". With E. & H.T. Anthony, New York imprint on verso. Very fine with double ruled gold border. $100-150
