Bharti Kher has been making use of the bindi (a representational third eye) in her work for over 8 years. She sees it as a marker that talks of ritual, of conceptual clarity, and brazen habit. The bindi becomes that leitmotif that connects disparate ideas and things. In Kher's hands, the bindi transcends its mass-produced diminutiveness to become a powerful stylistic and symbolic device. Painstakingly stuck, one by one, in a meditative process, in either orderly geometric patterns or organic, teeming masses on colored or mirrored wall panels and on her sculptures, the bindis not only create extra-ordinary visual wealth but also allow for a multiplicity of meaning.
