Item Overview

Description

Arrival of the stage coach, mixed media, 490 x 405 mm, signed "Birch" in ink lower left. Matted. Possibly for St. Nicholas , n.d. English-born Reginald Birch became famous as the original illustrator of Frances Hodgson Burnett's enormously successful Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886). His influential depiction of the little golden-curled velvet-suited lace-collared lord was the scourge of disgruntled little boys across America. He was also one of the most prolific and popular contributors to St. Nicholas . Birch was especially good at depicting Georgian subjects as in this energetic coach scene. One of the most celebrated designers of his generation, he was also a founding member of the Society of Illustrators in New York.
