Item Overview

Description

[BLAEU, Joan (1596-1673), Pieter Blaeu (1637-1706), Joan II Blaeu (1650-1712) and Rutgert Christoffel ALBERTS. Nieuw Vermeerderd en Verbeterd groot Stedeboek van Piemont en van Savoye. The Hague: Rutgert Christoffel Alberts, 1725.] Large 2° (510 x 340 mm). Engraved plate of the arms of the Duke of Savoy, 4 single-page and 47 double-page engraved plates, of which 6 are folding. (Lacking engraved title, 85 plates and all the letterpress text, one plate loose, occasional very light spotting, browning and soiling, some 12 plates trimmed close.) Late 19th-century half calf (worn, covers detached). Provenance: Museum of Science and Art, Edinburgh (library stamps to versos of plates and recto of plate of arms).

Alberts' issue of the Blaeu's townbooks of Piedmont and Savoy, which include maps, plans, bird's-eye-views, topographical views, plates of monuments and architectural highlights from every major town and city in the region. Although lacking the title, this is either Alberts' Dutch or French edition since these were the only issues to include the plate of the seige of Turin entitled 'Plan de la Ville et Citadelle de Turin' which is present here. The plate 'Alladiense Palativm' (van der Krogt's plate no. 59 in the Piedmont volume) is here numbered 'LVI', and not 'LVII', with the final 'I' erased, a variant not recorded by van der Krogt. Koeman I, Bl 107 and 108; van der Krogt IV-1 43:331.1 and 43:331.2. A complete plate listing is available in the online condition report. Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return.
