Description

Blatherwick (Charles, -1895). Mouth of The Clyde, 1878, watercolour, heightened with bodycolour, showing shipping off the Scottish coast, including a steam tug towing a sailing ship out to sea, signed and dated, 230 x 495 mm (9 x 19.5 ins), framed and glazed, with contemp. framer's label of James McClure & Son, Glasgow, and owner's bookplate of Robert Craig pasted to verso Charles Blatherwick trained as a doctor, but spent a considerable portion of his time painting landscape watercolours. He was a founder member and treasurer of the Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. He also exhibited there, as well as the Royal Academy on three occasions. He lived in Helensburgh, on the north side of the Clyde estuary. (1)
