BOIZOT Louis-Simon (1743-1809), entourage de.
Marie-Antoinette, reine de France (1755-1793).
Important buste en marbre blanc, reposant sur un socle carré, représentant la jeune souveraine coiffée d’un diadème et drapée d’une étoffe, vers l’âge de 30 ans. Usures du temps.
Travail de la fin du XVIIIe siècle.
H. : 94 cm – L. : 62 cm.

Historique : selon nos confrères anglo-saxons chez qui ce buste fut acquis par notre client en 2001, il pourrait être l’exemplaire, jusque-là perdu, du modèle de Louis-Simon Boizot commandé initialement pour le ministère des Affaires étrangères, par le comte de Vergennes, le 26 juin 1781. L’exemplaire original fut exposé au Salon en 1781 et son modèle en 1779 au Salon de la Correspondance. Un modèle similaire en plâtre est actuellement exposé à Versailles sous le n° d’inventaire MV5917, offert en 1923 par Louis Blériot au château de Versailles. Ce buste fut moulé d’après un original en marbre que Blériot vendit aux États-Unis en 1923. L’année 1781 fut importante puisqu’elle donna naissance le 22 octobre au duc de Normandie, dauphin de France. Malheureusement, ce fut un enfant de faible constitution, régulièrement malade qui mourut en 1789. L’importance du buste fut confirmée en 1784 lorsque la manufacture de Sèvres réalisa une série de bustes en biscuit accompagnés d’un buste du roi Louis XVI. Une paire de ces biscuits est exposée dans la collection de Sa Majesté la Reine Élisabeth II, voir dans l’ouvrage de G. de Bellaigue, publié en 1979 sur les collections de biscuits de Sèvres de la souveraine. Émile Bourgeois dans son ouvrage attribue le buste de Marie-Antoinette à un sculpteur inconnu allemand du nom de Wengmuller, qui aurait travaillé à la manufacture de Sèvres durant quatre ans (1786-1789). Cette même attribution est citée dans la Revue de l’Art ancien et moderne, n°130 du 10 janvier 1908, en page 39 avec une reproduction du buste en question. Voir aussi dans la revue Les Arts, n°160 daté de 1917, où est reproduit notre buste en couverture et en page 11, avec une attribution à Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) et datée 1786. Mais depuis, notre modèle a été attribué à Louis-Simon Boizot par Pierre Ennes, conservateur au département des objets du Louvre. D’autre part dans le catalogue de l’exposition « Marie-Antoinette à Versailles, le goût d’une reine » présentée du 21 octobre 2005 au 30 janvier 2006, Xavier Salmon écrit en page 87, au sujet de buste de Marie-Antoinette drapée : « … plusieurs hypothèses ont été avancées. Celles qui donnent à Wengmuller (Bourgeois 1909) ou Houdon sont aujourd’hui unanimement rejetées au profit d’une attribution à Boizot. Les caractéristiques stylistiques du portrait semblent en effet l’appuyer. Notons cependant qu’en 1996 est apparue sur le marché de l’art (Londres, galerie Daniel Katz) une esquisse en terre cuite du buste drapé de la souveraine signée par Félix Lecomte et datée 1784… » Boizot était l’élève de Michel-Ange Slodtz et gagna le premier prix de sculpture en 1762 en présentant La Mort de Germanicus. Il obtint son diplôme de l’Académie française à Rome et y séjourna de 1765 à 1770. Il retourna ensuite à Paris et y resta jusqu’à sa mort en 1809, exposant régulièrement au Louvre. De 1774 à 1785, il fut le directeur des Ateliers royaux de la manufacture de Sèvres.

Provenance : notre buste provient de l’ancienne collection de M. Quintin Craufurd (1743-1819). Il fut mis en vente à Paris, chez Mes Alexandre, Peytouraud et Delaroche, les 18 et 19 novembre 1820 sous le n°416. La fiche descriptive de ce buste figure dans le catalogue raisonné de la collection Craufurd, publié en 1819. Ce dernier entretenait des relations intimes avec la cour française et en particulier avec la reine Marie-Antoinette. Il était, avec son épouse Eleanor Sullivan, l’un de ceux qui avaient organisé la fuite à Varennes. En mai 1792, il avait réussi à s’échapper et vivait à Bruxelles, mais la même année il est rentré à Paris dans l’espoir de sauver les prisonniers royaux. Il a vécu parmi les émigrés français jusqu’à ce que la paix d’Amiens permette son retour à Paris. Grâce à son influence, Craufurd put rester à Paris après la reprise de la guerre et y mourut le 23 novembre 1819. Ce buste passera ensuite dans la collection du célèbre marchand américain Cyril Humphris, mis en vente chez Sotheby’s à New York le 11 janvier 1995, sous le n° 71, puis à Londres le 5 juillet 2000, sous le n° 125, avant d’être acquis par l’actuel propriétaire le 12 décembre 2001, chez Sotheby’s Londres, sous le n° 51.

Coutau-Bégarie Auction House guarantees the authenticity of attribution of property listed in the catalogue which can be modified by saleroom notices or oral indications given at the time of the sale, recorded in the official sale record.
The correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibitions or historical relevance of any property is a statement of opinion only.
Any illustrations in the catalogue are solely for the guidance of prospective buyers and are not to be relied upon in terms of colour or necessarily to reveal imperfections in any lot.

PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
