Description

DESCRIPTION: Boris Blai (American, 1893-1985). Plaster sculpture with brown patina. Athena. Titled and signed faintly to back of base. Boris Blai was born in Russia in 1893. As his artistic talent became apparent, he was sent to study under Auguste Rodin. Blai made numerous contacts with wealthy families in the area through his work and friendship with R. Tate McKenzie. He taught private art lessons in his home and later was a faculty member and director of the Oak Lane Country Day School. He founded the Stella Elkins Tyler School of Art (a campus of Temple University) in 1935 after Ms. Tyler donated her estate in Melrose Park to him for this use. In addition to his work with Tyler, he also founded the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences in 1948 and The Boris Blai College of Contemporary Arts in 1966 (now closed). Blai continued to teach, sculpt and exhibit until his death in 1985. PROVENANCE: Consigned by the artist's stepdaughter. MEASUREMENTS: 27-1/2". CONDITION: Minor overall wear.
