2° (316 x 232mm). Engraved title, letterpress dedication leaf, allegorical plate with the lion of St. Mark (Venice) above the island of Crete, and 61 numbered plates, plans and maps, of which 9 are folding. (First and last leaf attached to flyleaves, two leaves almost detached, short, clean tear at fold of large plate.) Contemporary vellum, remains of two fore-edge ties, red edges (dust-soiled, short tear at head of spine).

FIRST EDITION. Boschini, a Venetian painter, writer and engraver began work on this survey of Crete in 1645, the year the island was invaded by the Turks. Copies are also known with the privilege and date 1651 engraved on the title-page. A clean, fresh copy. Atabey 136; Blackmer 171; Brunet I, 1123.
