Contemporary limp vellum, ties (top corner and upper extremities of rear cover repaired, a few stains). FIRST EDITION, containing the second edition of Della cause della grandezza e magnificenza della città . Botero wrote his treatise on government as a refutation of Machiavelli. Della ragion di stato was immediately reprinted at Rome, Turin, and Milan, and translated into several other languages. In his treatise on the magnificence of cities Botero sets forth ideas on population that are now seen as precursors of the Malthusian principle. Adams B2548; Gamba 1271; Kress 178.
