Description

BOUCHARDON, Edmé (1698-1762). Études prises dans le bas peuple où Les Cris de Paris. Paris: E. Fessard, 1737-1746. Rare complete set. Edmé Bouchardon, pupil of Coustou le Jeune, worked in Rome for ten years, undertaking commissions for Clement XII and Cardinal de Polignac, before being recalled to Paris. During a long career as sculptor to Louis XV, he worked at Versailles, Grosbois and other royal residences. 'On lui doit aussi des dessins fort intéressants, particulièrement ceux pour la série des Cris de Paris ....' (Benezit). Bouchardon's images have a strong sculptural quality which makes them unique among costume prints. Cicognara 1601 (series 1-3); Colas 401; Cohen/de Ricci 179: 'très beau recueil'; Vinet 2235: 'types curieux, rendus avec bonheur'. 5 parts in one volume, quarto (344 x 260mm). 60 etched plates, including title to each suite, by A.C. Philippe de Tubières, comte de Caylus, after Bouchardon, retouched by Fessard (plates bound in numerical order, frst title lightly soiled and with tiny chip to lower corner, title to fourth suite lightly browned, occasional isolated spots elsewhere). Modern blue-grey boards (lightly rubbed, headcap fractionally frayed).
