Moulinet started his career as a primary school teacher. He came to Paris to work in the studio of Gleyre at the Beaux-Arts, then with Giraud. He showed for the first time at the Salon in 1859 painting mostly still-lives and children and continued to exhibit until 1881. He was made professor of design at the lycée de Chartres where the museum conserves his work.
