Notes

In 1893 Verster changed pastel for wax crayon. Het Warmonderhek (1894) shows the exceptional power of this difficult technique in the hands of "the greatest colourist of the century". Thus the old toll gate becomes a milestone in Dutch art history, a high point of 19th century drawing that shows the daybreak of modernism. Floris Verster, p. 68/69). Lodewijk van Deyssel, who visited the 1904 exhibition in Rotterdam, recognises the influence of mysticism in Het Warmonderhek, where other contemporaries see a transition to symbolism. But Grada Marius, one of the most prominent critics of her time, focuses on the evolution of his use of colours: "Wel een curieuse ontwikkelingsgang die men bij dezen bij uitstek self-made schilder kan waarnemen. The work, exhibited on a regular basis until 1929, began an undisclosed journey through the family of first owner Dr. Breuning (1863 - 1927), who moved to Groningen in 1911 to become a university professor in Germanistics. Thanks to a distant relative this key work in the oeuvre of "the greatest master of Leiden since the 17th century" has now surfaced again. Van Gogh and Toorop, considered the artists who inspired him most, come together in this brilliant masterpiece by Floris Verster. An autumn storm in fenced nature, black twiggy trees rather enhancing the striking colours as well as overhanging branches, Verster transcends all opposites in this extraordinary drawing with a mastery and an imagination reserved for the greatest. Only two related works from this phase, both created at Endegeest, were handed down to us, one is in the Kröller Muller Museum and the other one is in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
