Description

Sir James Wilson (1780-1847) British military officer. Wilson served under Wellington during the Napoleonic Wars. He was commissioned an ensign in the 27th Regiment of Foot at the age of 18 and eventually reached the rank of major general. He fought in the Dutch, Egyptian and Peninsular campaigns. He was awarded a distinguished service award and presented with the Gold Cross with clasp for wounds suffered at the battles of Albuera, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vitoria and Toulouse. This is the private, 120-page diary, spanning the year 1823, which has been bound to 5” x 7 ½” . The extensive daily entries chronicle the events of the 1823 French invasion of Spain in an attempt by Louis XVIII to restore Ferdinand VII to absolute power. Sample excerpts: February 10 “…papers are filled with reflections on the horrible iniquity of France proposing to invade Spain the Govrt (British) will observe strict neutrality for the present, but it is feared it cannot long be ket out of the War…” October 29: “…Consules have been sent out by our Govt. to south America to protect our Trade, and thereby in some degree acknowledge the Independence of the Colonies from Spain….”November 14: “…Barcelona has surrendered….” Other volumes of Wilson’s diaries are held by institutions.
