Suite of five duotone lithographed views of Honolulu after G.H. Burgess: "Port of Honolulu," "Diamond-Head from Look-Out," Diamond Head from Hon[olu]lu Beach," "Ewa from Honolulu," and "Nuanu Valley from the New Church Beritania St." [San Francisco]: Printed by Britton & Rey, [1857]. 7 3/4 by 12 5/8 inches each on 11 7/8 by 18 7/8 inch sheets, archivally matted and framed to 22 1/2 by 19 1/4 inches each. Complete set. Burgess, best-known for his vivid depictions of the California Gold Rush, journeyed to Hawaii in 1855 and remained for two years. His was the second series of views of Honolulu to be published by Britton & Rey after those of Paul Emmert. "In 1857 Emmert's lithographs were surpassed in quality, accuracy, and refinement of execution by the work of George H. Burgess" (Forbes).
