Description

(BENJAMIN F. BUTLER) (1818-1893) Union major general, called "The Beast" for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. A printed 1p. 4to., anti-Butler political handbill, boldly entitled: "BUTLER'S BLUNDERS", giving a lengthy denunciation of Butler's career as lawyer, general and politician. Butler ran for Governor of Massachusetts in 1878, 1879 and 1882 only winning on the third try. Plus, a 1p. 8vo., handbill, entitled: "Declaration of Rights and Principles, opposing the Massachusetts Sumptuary Laws", blaming them for, in part: "...fanatical and secret influences, under the pretence of moral reform and the public good...". Usual wear, else very good. $75-100
