Item Overview

Description

THE EMMA BABCOCK oil on canvas This painting was given to Ruhamah Herring Babcock in 1892 by her husband, Charles Benjamin Babcock. The flag on the ship has Emma Babcock - shortened from Ruhamah - painted on it. Charles Sidney Raleigh lived a varied and interesting life for over 94 years. Born in Gloucestershire, England, as a young man he came to America, where he joined the Navy and then became a merchant marine, ultimately serving in the Mexican War. Raleigh's first studio in Massachusetts was at the foot of New Bedford's Union Street, where captains and shipowners commissioned him to paint portraits of the vessels they commanded or owned. Works by Raleigh are in the collection of the Whaling Museum, New Bedford, Massachusetts.
