Description

CAMELIA WHITEHURST (American, 1871-1936), Oil on Canvas Portrait of Nancy Lee with Geisha Doll, impressionistic work depicting a young girl with blonde hair and black ribbon with bow, her pink dress hanging partway off her shoulder, her jewel-ringed hand holding a Japanese geisha doll with blue robe. Signed in upper right with palette knife "CAMELIA WHITEHURST". Reverse with black-painted title "NANCY LEE". The Baltimore native artist, Camelia Whitehurst, is most well-known for her portraiture of young children. She studied at Baltimore's Charcoal Club and at the Pennsylvania Academy with William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux. She later traveled throughout Europe and at one time opened a studio in Paris. She later set up studios on Baltimore's North Charles Street and Eutaw Place. Provenance: A recently-discovered example, gifted to the consignor by the original owner. Included in a later frame. Excellent condition. Unframed Dimensions: 22" x 18".
