Item Overview

Description

A rectangular gilt-metal mounted ebonized wood panel containing seven miniatures including an oval miniature of a girl holding a dove and six rectangular miniatures depicting mostly nude playful children simulating fashionable adult pursuits mainly referring to vanity grisaille heightened with watercolour on vellum, one on ivory between 1 3/16 (30 mm.) high and 21/2 (64 mm.) wide, gilt-metal mounts on an ebonized wood panel NOTES The sizes of the miniatures indicate that they were originally mounted on a rectangular Louis XV snuff-box; the two large miniatures (illustrated opposite) on cover and base of the box, the two oblong miniatures on the front and rear side walls, the two short rectangular miniatures on the left and right hand side walls. The oval miniature may have been mounted at the inside of the lid. The three main scenes are re-arranged part-copies after Bernard L‚pici‚'s engraving Jeux d'enfants of 1731 which is an inversed copy of Charles-Antoine Coypel's painting of 1728, later in the collection of Madame de Pompadour and recently sold at Christie's, London, 9 July 1999, lot 50 (see exhibition catalogue Madame de Pompadour et les arts, Versailles, Chƒteau, 2002, no. 55).
