Item Overview

Description

Carl J. Nordell (American, 1885-1957), "Mending the Nets," (possibly at Gloucester), c. 1928, etching on paper accompanied by the original pencil drawing done for the etching, etching is signed in the plate and measures 7.50 x 9.50 inches to the plate mark, sheet measures 10.50 x 12.50 inches. The drawing is nearly identical in size and in reverse and is mounted to a heavier stock of paper with inventory/collector's stickers to the verso. It is possible that this is a proof, and was not reproduced in any great numbers, as we cannot find another example. Both offered unframed. CONDITION: Good, some discoloration in the margins. Carl Johan David Nordell was born in Denmark and emigrated to the United States at about the age of ten. He first studied art techniques at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1905. Further studies led Nordell to New York's Art Students League and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Nordell was a full member of the North Shore Arts Association, Art Students League of New York, Boston Art Club, Salmagundi Club, Print Makers' Society of California, Brooklyn Society of Etchers and Allied Artists of America. Today his art will be found in the collections of the New York Public Library, Cleveland Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
