Item Overview

Description

This is a wonderful, expertly drawn, original watercolor is from a German ornithological manuscript. Each watercolor is on chain-linked, watermarked paper. The work was completed in 1806 and entitled Vogel in Beschreibungen und Abbildungen nach dem XII. vollstandigen Natur-system des Ritters Carl von Linne und nach der ausfuhrlichen Erklarung des Herrn Prof. Phil. Ludw. Statius Muller. This roughly translates to Birds in descriptions & illustrations after the natural system of Carl Linnaeus as translated by Philipp Muller.

The manuscript was likley privately compiled. The text containts excerpts from Linnaeus's Systema naturae as translated by Muller. Many of the images were influenced or drawn after the work of Buffon, Edwards, Seligmann, Bertuch, Borowski, and Aldrovandi. Each page often has the species name in German and Latin as well as the original artist's names. The images drawn from nature are often dated and read between 1771 and 1806 and likely based on the original drawings by the artist or compiler of the manuscript.
