Notes

Bought at an auction held in Conan Doyle's house, shortly after his death in 1930, this piece has remained with the recipient's family ever since. Conan Doyle visited Norway many times; the final occasion was in 1929, just one year before he died, for a psychic tour. He had many contacts in Norway, both personal and for business, but it is uncertain who the "affectionate" donors of this bronze were.

Strongly influenced by Thorvaldsen, Jacobsen specialised in portrait busts and monumental statuary as well as producing a number of paintings. He was sculptor to the King of Denmark.
