(Stilleben mit Blumenvase II, um 1888/89, Paris) Aus einer wohlhabenden Gastronomenfamilie stammend, konnte Carl Schuch sein Leben schon als junger Mann frei von ökonomischen Zwängen führen. Jedoch war bereits seine frühe Kindheit von Tragik und Verlust gezeichnet: im Alter von nur zwei Jahren verlor er die lungenkranke Mutter, nur drei Jahre später starb auch der Vater, weswegen Carl und seine ältere Schwester von ihrer Tante erzogen wurden. 1865 schrieb sich Schuch an der Wiener Akademie ein, verließ diese jedoch nach zwei Jahren wieder, um stattdessen Unterricht bei dem Landschaftsmaler Ludwig Halauska zu nehmen. Nach dem Tod seiner Schwester im Jahr 1869 verließ er Wien. Rastlos umherschweifend lebte der Künstler in den darauffolgenden Jahren unter anderem in Venedig, Rom, Neapel, München, Brüssel und Paris. Erst 1894 kehrte er, von Krankheit gezeichnet und kaum noch arbeitsfähig, nach Wien zurück, wo er 1903 im Alter von 57 Jahren verstarb. Dem Stillleben wandte sich Schuch vor allem in seiner späten Schaffensperiode zu. Der grobe Pinselduktus im vorliegenden Blumenstillleben spiegelt diese Entstehungszeit wider. In einer kugelförmigen Glasvase stehen die roten Pfingstrosen auf braunem Grund vor einer graublauen Draperie - auf ebensolche Komplementärkontraste in den Farbanordnungen zielt Schuch in seinen späten Kompositionen. Die innere Harmonie des Bildgefüges und die Beherrschung der Kontraste sind, viel mehr als die Gegenständlichkeit des Dargestellten, seine Mittel, um die wahrgenommene Wirklichkeit in Farbtöne zu übersetzen.
