Item Overview

Description

Carl Schuch (Vienna 1846-1903) A Mill near Purkersdorf, signed, dated and inscribed C. Schuch (1)868 Purkersdorf, Oil on canvas, 44,5 x 35 cm, framed, (Rei) Carl Schuch: He studied between 1864-68 under Ludwig Halauska. He travelled with Albert Lang to Italy and Munich and between 1873-74 to Belgium and Holland. He lived in Paris in the 1980s, before returning definitively to Vienna in 1894. It was only after his death that his works became known outside his circle of friends. The Berlin Centenary Exhibition of 1906 brought him renown and today his works can be found in museums in Berlin, Bremen, Breslau, Munich and Zürich. Literature: Karl Hagemeister, Karl Schuch; his life and his Works, published by Bruno Gassirer, Berlin 1913, p. 18. "...he loved above all things to work outside in nature. His early life in Styria, in Salzkammergut, made him so energetic that when he found the time he also went to Mödling, Paierbach and Aussee. He had no wish to attend an academy, as he hated any sort of constrain or restriction, but recognised that he needed some training, however, and sought out a mountain painter for his teacher. There were two possibilities; one was Halauska, the other Hansch. He chose Halauska, and remained with him for about two years, from 1864 to 1867, and only once, in 1868, did he go on study trip with him into the countryside. That was in Purkersdorf. It cannot be doubted that such a raw youth as Schuch should be influenced by his teacher..."
