In 'The Galateas of Carla van de Puttelaar', Rudy Kousbroek observes: 'The stone forms have started to breathe, a gentle blush colours the marble, sweet undergrowth covers the mound of Venus, yearning to be stroked like fields of grass in the wind. Now the marble also shows signs of activity: here and there you glimpse a bruise; the transformation from divine to human is visible in the marks of clothes on the skin and the presence of moles. In short a miracle has taken place, marble has come to life: that is what these photos show.' (Carla van de Puttelaar, pp.9-10)

Van de Puttelaar studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including a solo show at Rencontres d'Arles, 2006, and the key group show Netherlands Now at Maison Européene de la Photographie in 2006. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and has been published widely. Her works are held in various private and institutional collections, including Huis Marseille, Amsterdam. She lives and works in Amsterdam.
