Item Overview

Description

GENOA 1754 - 1815 HERCULES AND DEIANIRA WITH THE CENTAUR NESSUS Point of the brush and brown and grey wash, heightened with white 338 by 449 mm

Artist or Maker

Provenance

Santo Varni (L.3531), bears, on the old mount to the right, his numbering, crossed out and attribution, in pen and brown ink: Carlo Baratta and to the left his inventory number: 1189 Coll-ne S. Varni

Notes

This comes from the collection of Santo Varni, who assembled in Genoa a collection of about four thousand sheets, and it bears his attribution to Baratta. This very pictorial drawing does not seem relate to any known work by the artist, but is typical of his technique which is characterised by an exuberant and broad use of wash and strong white heightening. Mary Newcome Schleier has kindly confirmed the attribution to Baratta from an image.
