Carlotta Nowlan (British, d.1929) MR AND MRS WILLIAM BUTLER LANGMORE and MR AND MRS EDWARD ELLIS (SET OF FOUR MINIATURES) three of the four signed either "C. Nowlan" or "Carlotta Nowlan"; all four inscribed on reverse watercolour on ivory; three oval shaped, one rectangular 6 by 5cm., 2.5 by 2in. William Butler Langmore, born September 11th, died December 28th 1891 in his 80th year on the anniversary of his wedding day. His wife, born July 2nd 1821, was the eldest child of Sir Frances Graham Moon Bart. Their daughter, May Langmore, married Mr Edward Ellis; both daughter and son-in-law are pictured here in the second pair of miniatures. All four are the work of Miss Carlotta Nowlan of the Elms, North Cheam, Surrey, a miniature painter who exhibited primarily at the RA and with the Royal Miniature Society. Also offered with this lot is an unsigned Victorian portrait of a gentleman, oil on millboard, rectangular but in a feigned oval, 4.75 by 3.5 inches; as well as a framed print and an original watercolour on ivory of figures outside a mosque, 1.25 inches in diameter.
