NOTE

Luyckx returned to this handsome subject of a festoon of flowers and fruit suspended before a niche throughout his career. The present picture is most similar to A Swag of Roses and Other Flowers in a Marble Niche, sold New York, Christie's, June 2, 1988, lot 94. The reddish-brown marble and shape of the niche are virtually the same in both pictures. Another similar "festoon" picture, where the artist used almost identical blue ribbons and brass rings from which to suspend a heavy arrangement of flowers, was sold New York, Sotheby's, January 26, 2006, lot 11, for $204,000.
