La superbe caisse en bronze ciselé et doré de ce cartel d'applique
correspond au travail de l'un des plus importants bronziers de la
première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, Charles Cressent a qui l'on peut
attribuer cette aeuvre du plus pur style rocaille. Fleurettes, ombilics,
enroulements et rinceaux feuillagés parcourent l'ensemble de la
composition jusqu'au cul-de-lampe. Celui-ci s'agrémente également
d'un masque coiffé d'un diadème à plumets. L'exubérance du décor
apparaît aussi au regard de ces rares motifs de phénix et d'aigle
aux ailes déployées. En partie supérieure, un enfant ailé soulève
une draperie à franges pour dévoiler un masque solaire, symbole
du Point du Jour ou de l'Aurore. Le cadran circulaire signé d'André
Furet se compose de treize pièces émaillées indiquant les heures
en chiffres romains et les minutes en chiffres arabes. Ce superbe
cartel est attribué à Charles Cressent, éminent bronzier mais aussi
ébéniste qui travailla essentiellement sous la Régence et le règne de
Louis XV. Il se distingua par des créations souvent spectaculaires et
originales répondant à de grandes commandes particulières. Notre
aeuvre semble correspondre ce type de commande, réalisée pour un
personnage important du Royaume compte tenu de l'originalité de
son décor et de son iconographie. Le cartel que nous présentons
semble être un modèle unique car, jusqu'alors, aucun autre cartel de
ce type n'est connu. Il s'inspire cependant librement, mais dans un
esprit plus rocaille du modèle déjà créé par Cressent un peu plus tôt
vers 1730 dit « au masque de Borée ».
Ce dernier fut livré pour la chambre de la Dauphine au Château de
Versailles. Dans cet exemple apparaît également des animaux
fantastiques tels que des dragons. Une figure d'enfant ailé similaire à
celle couronnant notre cartel est visible également dans une aeuvre
de Cressent et conservée au Musée Condé de Chantilly.
Notons que celui-ci fut livré pour un important dignitaire, le Fermier
Général Marin de la Haye, futur Duc d'Aumale ; Ceci renforce
l'hypothèse que l'aeuvre que nous présentons, compte tenu de sa
qualité et de son originalité, fut réalisée expressément pour un haut
personnage.

Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to e 500 000:
25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to e 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted. Exhibitions prior to the sale at Marc-Arthur Kohn or on the sale point permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale, and therefore no claims will be accepted after the fall of the hammer. BIDS
