Carter (Frederick, 1883-1967). An important collection of approximately 225 various etchings, including duplicates, c. 1908-1932, including an original copper plate for The CafÚ Royal, Domino Room, 1920, an original pencil and coloured crayon drawing of a printer at a hand printing press, an etched membership certificate for the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers & Engravers, presented to Frederick Carter, dated 28th March 1912, signed by Frank Short and others, (folded), plate sizes 33 x 23 cm (13 x 9 ins) and smaller, all with full margins An important collection of original signed etchings and proofs by the unusual artist and writer Frederick Carter. The full range of his etched output is here represented, from the macabre spectacle of Les Dons du Diable of 1908, to the later modernist stylised landscapes and figures of the early 1930s, such as The Valley, and Seated Nude, both from 1932, which display a French influence on Carter's style. Amongst the works included in this lot are Les Dons duiable, 1908/9, Soubrette, 1909, the Apotheosis of Columbine, 1910-11, The Cast Shoe, 1910-11, Secret de Polichinelle, 1911, Polichinelle Symphony, 1911, Waterloo Bridge Step, 1913, The Wandering Jew in Eternity, 1915, Madame Time Reads the Prologue, 1916, Alcantara Bridge, Toledo, 1920, The Old Castle, Montelimar, 1920, Bridge at Avignon, 1922, Rochemaure, c. 1922, Drunken Satyr, 1925, Orgie, c. 1925, Apocalypse, 1925, Blind Understanding, c. 1925-26, Quarry Gap, 1927, Blind Man's Holiday, 1927, The Dean's Eye Gate, Wells, 1928, Wayside Cross, c. 1928, Youth and Age, 1928, Famished Beggar, c. 1928, Bandol Provence, 1931, Seated Nude, 1932, Goldilocks, 1932, D.H. Lawrence, 1932, T.F. Powys, 1934. Many of the images are present in duplicates, especially Les Dons du Diable (5), Secret de Polichinelle, Madame Time Reads the Prologue (9), Bridge at Avignon (11), Blind Man's Holiday (13), The Dean's Eye Gate, Wells (16), Wayside Cross (12) etc. A copy of the monograph on Carter's etchings by Richard Grenville Clark 1998) is included with this lot.
